About The Peregrine Falcons In 1995, PPL began releasing young peregrine falcons from the Tower building in downtown Allentown, Pa. The goal was to have a pair of peregrines return to the area to nest. After 13 years of waiting, the peregrine falcons that have made the Tower building their home base produced their first egg in 2008. Jeff Luzenski, senior environmental professional, who was instrumental in bringing peregrine falcons back to the Lehigh Valley, watches over the nests and provides updates. more info: [ www.birdsofpreyatppl.com ] Nesting information Originally, peregrines nested on high rocky cliffs. They do not use sticks or twigs to build their nests, but lay their eggs directly on the rocks and pebbles. More recently with the re-introduction of peregrines in cities, peregrines are now nesting on tall buildings and bridges. These nests are often on the ledges of the building or in nest boxes. The nest boxes are usually about two feet by three feet with a layer of small rounded pebbles in the bottom. At PPL’s downtown Allentown headquarters – called the Tower Building – the nest box is located in an enclosed area on the ledge of the 23rd floor. The only thing higher is the landing at the very top of the building that holds the flag pole. |
