FOP / FAMILY STATEMENT

foplogo.gif Below is a statement issued by Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #9 President Troy Heiser, on behalf of Officer Scott Wertz's family, at a news conference on August 10:

"Scott's family, friends, and we -- brothers and sisters in arms -- are grieving. Everyone thanks the local community, the family of fallen hero, Officer Michael Wise, law enforcement, correctional, fire, and other first responders who have taken their time to show their sympathy, love, and support for our fallen husband, father, friend, and brother. The family needs time to grieve. We all need time to grieve. The media need to understand and respect that. Scott deserves that. His family deserves that."

MAYOR McMAHON STATEMENT

Below is a statement issued by Reading Mayor Tom McMahon:

"The loss of a police officer in the line of duty is a painful experience for any community that is forced to go through it. We have had to do this twice in two years. When men and women like Officer Wertz dedicate their lives to the safety of the community and then are called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice, the immense suffering is felt not just by the immediate family, but also by the people Officer Wertz helped every day.

Public safety personnel need citizens to appreciate and support their efforts in every way possible. They deserve no less than that for what they do to make our communities safer.

We grieve for Officer Scott Wertz and his family and friends and are once again reminded that the very best way to honor Officer Wertz is to respect and support fellow officers in their mission to combat crime.”
