Pioneer Tunnel (6/15/05) It's billed as the natural resource that fired the Industrial Revolution. Pioneer Tunnel takes you deep inside America's coal mining history. Visitors board mine cards and ride into the depths of Mahanoy Mountain. Deep inside the man-made tunnels, the temperature drops to 52 degrees farenheit. You can also take a train ride around Mahanoy Mountain. The coal mining museum is located in Ashland in Schuylkill County. One-way distance: 55 miles from Downtown Reading. CLICK HERE for directions.
