Work to improve the Fifth Street Highway (Business Route 222) in the City of Reading, Muhlenberg and Ontelaunee townships in Berks County started Oct. 19.
The project will resurface the four lane section of roadway between approximately 200 feet south of Bern Street to approximately one half mile north of Bellevue Avenue, and resurface the three lane section of roadway between North Temple Boulevard and US 222 (Outer Bypass). It will also resurface almost two miles of southbound roadway between approximately one half mile north of Bellevue Avenue and 200 feet south of Bern Street. Other work includes curb ramp upgrades, guide rail replacement, and replacing bridge and pavement joints on the Fifth Street Highway Bridge over PA 12. On Oct. 19 workers will begin work to upgrade 78 curb ramps at signalized intersections on this stretch of the Fifth Street Highway. During the curb ramp work, motorists can expect lane restrictions Sunday through Thursday nights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Fifth Street Highway north and south through the end of this year. The remaining work on this project is anticipated to occur next year. All work on this project is expected to be complete in October 2010. All schedules are weather dependent. |
