Berks County - I-78 Median Barrier construction |
Median barrier work will begin Tuesday (Sept. 8) on Interstate 78 in Upper Tulpehocken, Tilden, Windsor and Greenwich townships, Berks County, between Exit 19 (PA 183) and the Lehigh County line.
Workers will install five movable median barrier gates. During construction, motorists can expect daytime lane restrictions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays. Motorists are urged to allow extra time in their commute and use caution driving through work zones. The gates are being installed as a safety measure so emergency officials can open the median and the Pennsylvania State Police can divert traffic from one side of the expressway to the other during an emergency closure of the highway. The movable median barrier gates will be installed at the following locations: - Between exits 19 (PA 183) and 23 (Shartlesville);
- Between exits 23 (Shartlesville) and 29 (PA 61);
- Between exits 30 (Hamburg) and 35 (PA 143);
- Between exits 35 (PA 143) and 40 (PA 737);
- Between exits 40 (PA 737) and 45 (PA 863).
The work is expected to finish in December. The average daily traffic volume on this section of I-78 varies between 35,644 at Exit 19 and 38,716 vehicles at the Lehigh County line. |
