Motorists traveling northbound and southbound on the PA Turnpike's Northeastern Extension (I-476) will be stopped a maximum of 20 minutes, south of the Lehigh Tunnel and north of the Mahoning Valley (Exit #74) Interchange.
Starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 until 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20; motorists will encounter bi-directional, single lane closures when traveling in the vicinity of the Mahoning Valley (Exit #74) Interchange. Motorists traveling on PA I-476 will be stopped for a maximum of 20-minutes on Monday, Nov. 23 and Tuesday, Nov. 24 between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Motorists traveling northbound approaching the Lehigh Tunnel and southbound before the Mahoning Valley Interchange should be prepared for slow moving and stopped traffic.
The stoppage, scheduled for noon, will allow the safe demolition of the rock slope adjacent to the Lehigh River Bridge. State Police will stop northbound traffic south of the Lehigh Tunnel (milepost A70.1), southbound traffic north of the Mahoning Valley (Exit #74) Interchange, and motorists entering I-476 at the Interchange from Route 209 will be stopped at the toll plaza.
The work is weather permitting and safety related. Unsafe conditions could cause the stoppage to be delayed for the protection of the traveling public and workers on the project. The general contractor, Walsh Construction, continues to excavate the rock slope adjacent to the Lehigh River Bridge and will require the 20-minute stoppages to safely complete the rock-slope demolition without jeopardizing worker and motorist safety. The contractor anticipates the complete rock-slope excavation will take several months with additional stoppages to be conducted Mondays though Thursdays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Motorists should anticipate traffic delays during the entire length of the project; to avoid delays seek alternate routes. The work is weather sensitive and may be delayed or rescheduled. |
