Long term lane restrictions resume on a portion of Interstate 176/Morgantown Expressway between exits 2 (South PA 10/PA23) and 10 (PA 724) in Caernarvon, Cumru, and Robeson townships and New Morgan Borough, Berks County.
Crews will begin placing barriers to close one northbound lane on Monday (March 16). Once the northbound lane restriction is in place they will begin closing one southbound lane, with one lane being closed on both northbound and southbound I-176 by the end of the week. The 24-hour lane restrictions are for the improvement project that began in June 2008 and is designed to reconstruct the roadway and rehabilitate several bridges along Interstate 176. Improvements to I-176 include concrete patching, shoulder reconstruction, bridge deck rehabilitation on six structures, upgrading the Exit 7 (PA 10) ramps and resurfacing the highway. The bridge deck rehabilitation will occur on the I-176 north and south bridges over PA 10, PA 568 and the Allegheny Creek, and Westley Road. Additional work includes new pavement markings, signs and guide rail installation. The total project length is 5.7 miles. Motorists can expect single lane conditions, 24-hours a day, on I-176 north and south until the completion of the project in November. Motorists are encouraged to allow for extra time when traveling through the area and use caution driving through the work zone. J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pa. is the general contractor on the $19.7 million project. This stretch of I-176 was built in the early 1960s and has an average daily traffic of 31,897 vehicles. |
