Joel D. Smith
is an Emmy-nominated reporter who's been covering Berks County and
beyond for WFMZ since December of 2004.
Some of Joel D.'s reporting has taken him to Virginia Tech, following
the school shooting there in 2007, and back into old stories in
desperate need of an update in his series
"Whatever Happened To?".
However, Joel says his focus is always on local stories first, and
finding ways to relate them to the viewers in a creative way.
A University of Maryland graduate, Joel's first on-air job was at WJAL-TV
in Chambersburg. Then he spent the next few years in the Midwest, at TV
stations in Sioux Falls, SD and Des Moines, IA.
Joel's career highlights include covering the Iowa Caucuses (he actually
lived just a few blocks away from where Howard Dean gave his infamous
"scream"), and delivering radio pre-game reports for the Baltimore
Ravens during their Super Bowl run.
With many relatives in the Lehigh Valley, Joel says someone in his
family is always watching 69 news. And when he's not spending time with
them, he's enjoying life with his wife Katelyn, and their newborn son
Sebastian.
